The instruction book (owner's manual) for my '35 specifies 5 quarts as the oil pan capacity. However, when I carefully fill the crankcase with the car level, 4 1/4 quarts are required to reach the "full' line. I have tried 3 dip sticks: all the same. Any thoughts? Thanks! Roger J.

Put 4 qts in and check stick and add a little to the full mark. Not rocket science !!! ken ct. Have 36 and been doing it that way for 25 yrs seems to be working.

Fill it with 5 quarts as the Owner's manual says. You may be missing the leather seal on the dipstick, as it usually takes 4 1/2 qts to reach the full mark. The 5 quarts will help in keeping your engine cool and well lubricated.

Thanks, gents, for your replies. Was not aware of a leather seal on the dip stick. Assume it to be approx. 1/16" thick? R.J.

Listen to TomO. He knows. The engineering drawings depict 5 US quarts. The lack of the dust seal on the dipstick may make a difference in the 'registered' amount as will "crud" in pan.

I have seen them from 1/16" to 1/8". I cannot find any specifications on it. The P/N is 68 6761. It is called "felt" in the 36 catalog and "gasket" in the post war catalogs. The exact specs can probably be found on the dipstick engineering drawings.
