Looked through the crankcase oil drain hole with a bore scope. Saw castleated hex nuts on rod bolts, but no cotter pins. This does not seem right. Opinions, please. Thanks! Roger J.

They are probably not castellated nuts, they are probably locking nuts, which are correct for the rods. The slits in the nuts should be too narrow to fit a cotter pin in.

Not sure what year you are referring to but assume '35. Tom/others - perhaps they are wired/not cotter-pinned and the wire may not be that obvious? Just a thought...

I agree that originally they had cotter pins installed. If the nuts are put on & torqued they won't come loose. Tight is tight.

Here is a link to Marsden type nuts, to show what I had described as the locking nuts. http://www.lok-mor.com/products/marsden.htm

Thanks for the very useful comments. I thought the slots on the nuts looked pretty narrow, even for 1/16" cotter pins. No need to drop the oil pan! Roger J.
