My 46 flathead has Westinghouse 6 volt sealed beams. They snapped into place perfectly in the old plastic socket receptors, but the three brass tangs are too long for the sockets on my new harness by about 8th of an inch. They will not seat properly. Did different seal beam manufacturers make the three tangs a standard length - as one would think, meaning the sockets on my new harness are for a different car entirely, or would a different brand seal beam perhaps have different length tangs and fit the new sockets as they should. Thanks for all input.

I've run into the same situation on more modern cars, but do not consider it as a problem. Even if some brass shows, the connection is made and the lights work. Now it is highly unlikely some conductor will drop across the exposed brass tangs and short out the circuit.

Dremel tool w/fine cutting disk &/or grinding disk to reduce length and smooth edges.

I'm of the opinion that the catch-all phrase 'poor quality' doesn't tell the whole story. A large percentage of these type of ill fitting part issues are due to dimensional conversion problems between inch and metric systems.

Thanks guys. Was going to go the Dremel route, but harness mfg is going to refit my old sockets to the new wiring. Just mailed them in.
