It is better to replace the solenoid with a 12 volt one than to try to reduce the voltage with a resistor.

It is unlikely that the type of resistor used for gauges, etc, when converting to 12 volts will handle the solenoid load. You didn't mention the year of your car. Most Columbia axles are shifted with a vacuum canister, while the Bendix type OD uses a dual wound solenoid controlled by a relay. To drop voltage, you need to know the current draw of the device. You can then calculate the load by using Ohm's Law, which says E ( voltage) equals I ( current in amps), multiplied by R ( resistance). This makes calculation tricky, as a solenoid is not just a resistance device, but generates impedance, a combination of resistance of the winding, and the action of the magnetic field on the coil.

Hi, I am changing my car over to 12 volts, understand I can use a resistor to reduce from 12 volts to on the 6 volts on the rear end solenoid, would anyone know the value of that resistor?
