Asked this question over a year ago and have long since forgotten the suggestions. I'm going to rewire my 46 coupe. The dash gauges are covered by a trim piece. Removing it would help me get a much better view to see what is going on behind. I can't tell if it is just clipped on, or bolted through somehow. Don't want to damage it of course. Anyone know how it is attached, and is it feasible to remove?

As I recall there are 2 3/16 studs spot welded to the plate, and they go through the dash and hold the instrument cluster in place.

cliftford is correct. You will need a 3/8 deep well socket to remove the nuts from the studs. When working under the dash you might want to invest in a "headlight". They are sold by Harbor Freight, etc and are a battery powered light that straps to your head. Very handy when working under a dash.

Let me add a more couple thoughts: spray a little WD 40 on the studs first. It doesn't take much twisting to break the spot welds on the plate. It doesn't hurt to disconnect the battery before working under the dash.

Yes, one stud each end of cover plate. BY ALL MEANS DISCONNECT THE BATTERY !!! I burned a gauge up once. Live and learn.

Along with the other suggestions, I like to remove the front seat, when I have a long job under the dash. That way I can rest my sore old head on a pillow and stretch my legs a little.
