Hello, At first, sorry my english - I am from Czech Republic(cenral Europe) I would like to know which type of distributor belongs to this engine (on photo). I own Ford V8 1936 passeneger, but I don´t know the engine is original(or the same type) to this car. The distributor(3holes) does not fit to flange on block(4holes). Simply description of engine: Cylinder head have 24 stud and cylinder bore is 3 3/16". Thanks for your help. Ondrej Rynes, Volyne, CZ

The engine block appears to be a Ford 81A, but it could be a Mercury 99A. 1938-40 style 81A, does not have the raised surface under the intake manifold, neither do some of the 99A blocks. The 81A blocks were 3 1/16 bore so yours could have re-bored sometime, or The 99A were 3 3/16. Many of the 99A blocks have "99" numbers stamped into the front intake manifold surface, near the front of the block. The 37-41 distributor is proper for either engine block. These distributors do have 4 holes but only three were used for mounting. Looks like you have parts that will work together, but may not be exactly what came with the car from the factory. Your English is dobro!

Hello Ondrej Rynes, When you put this together be careful that the raised area fits into the end of the crankshaft. The raised area of the distributor driveshaft is not in the center of the shaft, it is offset to one side. People have broken the distributor housing mounting tabs or ears by tightening the distributor when the raised area is not seated in the crankshaft correctly. I hope this makes sense! Look carefully at the photo you posted of the distributor you can see the raised area is not in the center. Also in the first picture you can see the slot is not in the center. -VT/JeffH

Thanks for reaction. Engine was allready running, now I do general repair.. I was confused with diferent number of holes( block x distributior ) Bore 3 3/16" doesnt look like re-bored. On block I found only this number: 659A. Is this number usable for identification? Have a nice day Ondrej Rynes

The engine block in the photo is a 39 - 40 239 cubic inch block. The round hole in the center was only used in these blocks. It is also a factory relieved block used in the big trucks. Trucks used this engine in 41 also. The number shown in your photograph is a casting code, used only by the factory. Tom
