Many thanks for all the replies. John was right I missed the bolt directly under the pulley as it was covered up in sludge and oil. Now have the pump off and dealing to it. What an amazing forum this is with all you experienced guys and your wealth of knowledge. Thanks again from New Zealand.

Yep, four bolts used to hold each water pump on the block of a 46 Merc engine (assuming you do have a '46 Merc engine?) One inside the water "inlet", one in about the center of the pump casting, above the water inlet, and two at the top outer edge of the casting, on either side a the pulley. Sometimes dirt/crud will build up and cover the head of bolts, especially that one that's recessed into the center of the pump casting. John

Can you find all the bolts by looking at a gasket? Charlie Stephens

According to Mac Vanpelts website pics, shows 4 boltholes including the one in the inlet. You claim to have removed 3. You should have 1 more bolt somewhere. ken ct.

I have a 1946 Ford Merc cabroliet and am having trouble removing the leaking water pump away from the engine block. I have removed all the three bolts which includes the sneaky one in the water outlet where the hose fits on. Is there a bolt I am missing? I can not break the actual pump away from the block. I am loath to hit the bracket with a hammer that is attached to the engine mount. I have also taken the weight off the motor with a jack. Any ideas? Thanks Mike.
