Thanks for the replies. I didn't remember any pipe there when I took the engine apart and will not put one there. So the consensus is that it is not needed.

Ford did suggest the small pipe be removed when the newer style oil pump was installed in place of the early style pump due to interference. Ford did continue to use the oil return pipe well past 1940. It helps to direct the flow of oil back to the oil pan and past the rear seal, especially on steep upward inclines such as a hill. If you decide to use the pipe make sure it does not extend into the rear main bearing either making contact with the crankshaft or blocking the flow of oil to the pan, and does not make contact with the oil pump.

The threaded hole in the rear main bearing cap is a vestige left over from earlier engines that had a oil pipe threaded into the hole. This pipe (18-6326-B) seemed to disappear about the time the new improved oil pump came out. Your LB engine shouldn't need the pipe. Don't plug it!!!!!!!

It is for a drain tube that conducts the oil back into the pan. It was used in early engines to try to minimize oil loss thru the maze and slinger, which usually oiled the underside of the vehicle and the road.

Hi, I have been putting my 36 engine together and was about to put the pan on when I noticed a strange threaded whole that appears to lead into the rear main bearing. What is this for and should it be plugged?
