1948 and back, long shoe goes in front. 1949 and up short shoe goes in front.

Because the Ford brakes have a fixed pivot point, the front shoe does most of the work going forward, therefore the front shoe is the longest. The Bendix type floating pivot or self energizing brakes require the longer shoe at the rear of the backing plate. This is because the rotation of the wheel forces the rear shoe against the drum, so that most of the work is done by the rear shoe.

If my memory is correct, the long shoe goes in rear on front wheel and to front on rear wheel, please correct me if I am incorrect.thanks
