Hi new to your forum. looking to purchase a 40 standard coupe, I beleive the serial number should be on the left front frame rail. What should the number start with? can you give me an example. I had a 40 in 09 titled in Mass then to Ct, to NJ clean titles, but I think the number was incorrect, it started with CEB four numbers than VO and then 3 more numbers. one other question do all original 40's on the firewall have the Ford motor company body plate/tag? Thanks so much Bill

The range of serial numbers for 85hp engines built in 1940 was 18-5210701 to 18-5896294. The engine serial number was applied to the vehicle frame and the transmission during assembly. The only plate attached to the firewall was a patent number plate, listing various Ford patents. You can find a wealth of Ford information at the following site: http://www.vanpeltsales.com. Hope this helps.

I have 3 40s and all have their (visible) VIN up close to the front crossmember on the left frame rail as well as the transmission case.

Ditto deuce-roadster. I also have 3 40's and the numbers are next to the front crossmember.
