Does anyone know of a good radiator shop to clean a tank in the south suburbs of Chicago? I have a '36 touring Fordoor.

Tim, if you have an old tank that needs cleaning I would look long and hard at purchasing a new tank. By the time you have it cleaned and sealed it will cost almost as much as a new one. I gave up on cleaning old tanks long soon after they started producing new tanks. When you get the old tank out tap on the top and bottom with a hammer to make sure it is solid. Old tanks tend to look good from the outside, but can be compromised by rust on the inside.

I did buy a new tank for $215 but then decided to keep the old one. It is solid by rust flaking on the inside.

If you have flaking rust inside the tank, the original tern coating has been breached. Now that fuel is oxygenated, the rust will increase considerably. Like Tom, I learned a long time ago that replacement is the only good choice.

I too bought a shiny new gas tank for my '34. I like the fact that it is clean and new but I was disappointed that the mounting holes were not quite right and the neck is so off center to the hole in the rear pan that I cannot install a tank neck grommet.

Thanks Tom. Rex is about 15 minutes from me, I'll check it out tomorrow. Have you used them?

I have used a different branch of the company, the one in East Dundee and the one in Peoria that was run by Bill Lemaster.
