I broke one of my "original" tail lamp lenses and ordered 2 new ones from one of the preferred early V-8 suppliers and was very disappointed to find that the new lenses are so dark that light transmission is greatly reduced. Exactly the opposite of what I'm trying to do. I'm open to suggestions.

Bill, I bought new lenses for my '41 from C&G and they are just fine.

There were lenses of different shades of red. I like the deep dark wine color, myself.

Apparently there is no real standard of darkness for what they stock and sell. I suggest you ask them to look in their stock for some lighter colored lenses. You need to be seen when you apply the brakes, and they should accommodate you.

I bought a pair for my '34 roadster from MACs several years ago to replace the blue dot ones that were on the car. They looked fine when I got them. Now most of the red has faded out of one of them yet the other still looks OK.
