The lacquer may not hold up to the ethanol, but a urethane with hardener will.

I believe Sunflower drives a 35, and those tanks were painted, although under the paint would be "tern-coat" which was a tin/lead coating no longer in general use.

You don't say what year your car is. Th 41 to 48 Ford book says that most gas tanks in those years were not painted and were the natural gray color of the terne coating. My 42 has its original tank and it shows no sign of ever being painted. You may want to consider that before going to a lot of trouble to paint the tank if your car is one of those years..

Lacquer is "gas proof", and is used on any parts that are subject to exposure. Whether it will resist alcohol is a question, particularly as E-15 becomes available. Almost all enamel paints will crinkle and fall off with gas. I suppose powder coating would work, but would have to be done before installation.

Alan: That's simply gorgeous, but wouldn't the original tank be more of a semi-gloss "chassis black"? Dan

The best paint? What is your end goal? Protection? Appearance? What? I use base / clear polyurethane enamel. Looks beautiful and holds up very well.
