When using The '39 rear spring & rearend in a '36 chassis, the height doesn't change [assuming the same amount of leaves in the spring]. The change in height occurs when using a '35 '36 front wishbone in a '37 to '40 chassis, this would raise the frontend approximately 3/4". '36 wishbones were commonly used unsplit with '33-'36 dropped axles with their narrower perch centers & spring in '40 fords because of the deeper drop available with the earlier axles.

I beleve the '39 spring will raise the '36 higher than stock by an inch or so. If i'm wrong, someone tell me?

If you are talking about complete rear end assemblys, yes , '35 thru'40 will fit using the appropriate spring & brakes to fit your application.

There were three different axles for '35-'48 Fords. '35 - '38 length 32.85" with 18 teeth. '39 - '41 length 32.85" with 16 teeth. '42 - '48 length 33.70" with 16 teeth. The '35 - '41 axles, all having the same length, are all interchangeable in matching pairs which also include the appropriate matching spider gears. Axle housings for the above axles are further divided into groupings based on their spring hangers and shock mounts: '35-'36 '37-'40 '41 '42-'48 The above information and more will be found in this article from Street Rodder Magazine, January 2003: http://www.flatheadv8.org/fordrear.htm

specifically, would a '39 rear axle [with a columbia] bolt into a '36 coupe? even better, which years are interchangeable?
