The arms on my car are authentic. I am only attempting to determine why they bring the bumper in so close to the grille.

We all assume that when Ford gives out spec's to subcontractors that the resulting part will be the same throughout the distribution system. Yet we often encounter "variations" in regional parts. Perhaps Ford sub'd bumper brackets. I don't know, perhaps someone like Bob Lincoln can trace the process. I've seen two completely different emergency brake ratchet assemblies on two 38 Fords built at the Long Beach assembly plant, with one having a 78 prefix, and the other an 81 prefix. We also know that Ford liked to use up in-stock items. Alan Simpson and my 38's color (Desert Sand) is an example of using up overstocks of earlier colors under the sales banner of "Easter colors". At one time, I had a copy of the branch letter that explained that from the Clubs 38 adviser back in 1975, when I was trying to figure out why my car (which I grew up with) didn't have a color officially listed as an available color. I'm sure you are challenged by these variations, but perhaps we need to further explore the supply chain that existed during the production year. A variation in bumper brackets may not be a repop error, but an example of using an "atypical prototype".

Stroker, I have considered that and yes, a little variation, no doubt. In my case, the bumpers (arc) match both front and rear so I remain dubious to believe they are damaged. I have recorded variations of over 2". I have only eye witnessed four of the vehicles. The others? I can only take the measurements under advisement. still, over 2" variation? I am really getting comfortable with the notion there were three design releases.

Kube: In my experience, stock factory bumper arms are fairly malleable. Is it possible that some of the minor variations observed are simply from using the bumper as a "bumper"?

Thanks Parrish. I posted this request on another website forum. From my personal experience and that of all who responded it seems there were three different but correct dimensions. I have searched my documents and find at minimum one design revision and at a much later date, a "replacement" part number that I would guess is NOT an exact match to the authentic equipment nor the first revision. and, if that is not confusing enough, I see Drake sells arms with yet another number, that having a "B" suffix. The "B" suffix would indicate a second design revision from the OEM arms. I am not placing much weight on repop parts numbers as it is well know they change numbers and / or apply numbers as they feel necessary in some cases.

Might some of you guys out there with 39 Ford deluxe models get me a measurement as depicted in the photo? Doesn't have to be precise. I have measured four different cars to date and they all vary quite a bit.
