In addition to Tom's info, it is advisable to replace the Bakelite switch body and "brush". Both are usually worn where the contacts slide acoss the switch body. For your '39, the item# at C&G for the body and brush set is 81A-3704/9-K (800/266-0470). The brush has a springy brass contact plate that restores the necessary pressure. Some recommend just sanding down the brush groove, but for about $20 you can do it right.

The original switch on a 39 Ford is held on by 2 screws. Label and disconnect the wires and you will see the 2 screws holding the metal box. The lock does not have to be removed in order to replace the switch.
