Replacement water pumps were made and sold "back in the day" by places such as Western Auto, etc. The pulleys were sometimes pressed instead of cast, which can account for the difference. As to old manuals, many are now incorrect due to the Ford practice of issuing "service replacements" that superceeded the originals. This was to reduce the number of similar parts required for dealer repair stock. That is why some numbers in the "green book" are inconsistant after the publishment date of 1950. We keep a shelf full of old manuals for reference use on occasion.

Kubes, Thanks again for another quick reply. I had forgotten that I have an old Flatrate Manual printed in 1946 which shows the Ford part numbers for most everything from 37 to 45. The water pump numbers in it are as you stated. Would you know if these old Flatrate Manuals are accurate for the years and models stated. Don

The correct 1940 water pumps, part numbers 78-8501 (right side) and 78-8502 (left side), had cast iron bodies. The back sides of the bodies had part numbers 78-8504 (right side) and 78-8505 (left side) cast into them. The Ford script was first added to the front sides of pump bodies in 1947. The water pump pulleys were cast iron. Three ridges on the front sides of their hubs first appeared in May, 1945 for machining purposes. The 13 and 17 were casting numbers.

I have two pumps that were removed from 40 Fords. They could have been replaced in the past. My question is what do these part numbers identify? They are right (passenger side) pumps. 78-8595 with the number 13 below the part number 78-8505 with the number 17 below the part number The difference that I can observe is in the pulleys. Is either one actually correct for a 40? Don
