Replaced the solenoid and wired like the old one but engine will not start using the starter button but will using the solonoid button. When I switched the wires on the solenoid the starter button works but engine shuts down when button is released. Any suggestions ? Thanks a bunch.

The starter button grounds the wire coming from the center terminal of the solenoid If you have the correct solenoid, with the solenoid mounted with the button on the bottom, the battery connection goes to the terminal on the driver's side of the car, and the starter cable goes to the terminal on the passenger side of the car. The driver's side terminal also has the wire for supplying voltage to the rest of the car. You should have at least 1 wire and a cable on the driver's side terminal, one wire on the center terminal and a cable to the starter on the passenger's side terminal. You should measure 6 volts at the center terminal of the solenoid when everything is connected correctly.

If you have a "universal" type solenoid with two smaller terminals, you must connect one of those to the battery side of the solenoid, and the other one to the starter button. The original solenoids had that connection internally. The universal type was made so the starter button could furnish ground, or could be used with a car that furnish power, such as the "key start" ignition switches. If the engine shuts down when you release the starter button, move the small terminal connection to the other side.
