40's Ford wheelbse is 114". Mercury is 118". Where in the frame and or driveline did Ford add the 4". I have a Ford front and rear A frame assemblies complete that I want to put onto a 48 Mercury frame. Will they fit right in without modification?

Fred: the difference in wheelbase is found in the frame ahead of the firewall. Other than the front sheet metal, the majority of Mercs share the Ford driveline.

Fred The other item you would need to look at would be the steering column. It would seem that it has to be 4" longer. I know the firewall on my car has a knockout to accommodate the Mercury steering column at a different angle than the Ford. Ted

Fred, The 41 Ford and Mercury front radius rods are the same, the 42-48 radius rods interchange also. The toque tube from 41-48 interchange, but the rear radius rod for 41 are different than the 42-48. The 39-40 Mercury rear ends and front ends will not interchange with Ford of any years. If the parts that you have are 48 Ford, you should have no problem using them. The Ford standard rear end ratio was 3.78:1 while the Mercury was 3.54:1.

The standard Ford rear axle ratio for 1946 was 3:54 as was the Mercury, the 3:78 was actually optional. This again was 1946. 1947,1948 I do not know but think it was like you said 3:78 because customers complained that the takeoff from stoplight was gone as before the war.
