Stubborn Brass Plug

I need to replace the threaded brass plug on the transmission side of what I guess is the cylinder block main oil passage for a 1947 V8 engine ("59" in raised letters on the bell housing). Anyone know where I can get one? I'm also gonna need to chase the threads in the block for this plug. Does anyone know what size/threads per inch chase I'll need and where I can get one? Any help is greatly appreciated. Paul

That plug is a common 1/4" X 18 pipe plug that seals the rear of the main oil gallery. You should be able to find one locally. Being a pipe thread, the hole in the block requires a pipe tap because it is cone shaped. Unless the threads are badly damaged, chasing them is not a good idea. If it was actually a brass plug, the threads should be OK. Most of the plugs are iron. When replacing, put a good grade of sealer on the threads of the plug, but not the hole. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting sealer in the oil system. As with all threads in an old cast iron block, be sure to exercise caution when tightening. Pipe plugs seal with the special thread, and can damage the threads if overtightened.
