Any name brand transmission oil will work fine. They all contain "high pressure" additives, and will not attack components. I prefer 140 weight oil, as I don't drive in very cold weather. The heavier weight oil tends to leak less. Don't over fill the transmission. Fill only until the oil reaches the lower edge of the filler hole. If you overfill, allow the excess to drain before closing the filler.

One last question on this topic, should I stay away from the GL-5 oils or will any modern oil work?

Ditto on the 90 weight. That's what Ford recommended and that's what I put in the '47.

Jeff, The original Service Manual calls for 90 weight in the summer and 80 weight in the winter. Living in South Texas, I have always gone with 90 weight. Frank

Would like to drain and refill transmission in newly acquired 48 coupe. What is the heaviest fluid I could run that would be safe for the trans? I've seen on here I could use 85/140 but that some could attack brass or bronze parts in the trans. What would be best and safest to use? Thanks Jeff
