I'm planning on having my dash painted and need to get it out of the car. Does the steering column need to be removed or can it just be loosened and dropped? Any other potential problems I should look for?

Usually you have to unbolt the steering gear from the frame and lower it to get the dash out. When the car was made, the body was dropped onto the chassis, so the steering column wasn't an obstacle.

On my 40, I just unbolted the column from the dash and then I disconnected the wires from the gauges, removed the bolts and screws holding the dash and tilted it to clear the steering wheel and slid it out the passenger side of the car. The 36 should be easier to do as the dash is flatter and there is more room to slide it out.

Just unbolt the column, remove the dash bolts and screws and you can lift it right out.
