Stromberg 97 Carb Mixture Settings

I'd start by turning them both out 1-1/2 turns, and then hook up a vacuum gage, and adjust them for maximum vacuum at idle. These screws only affect the mixture at idle, and you will probably have to adjust the idle speed down, once the motor loosen's up a bit. To change the fuel mixture at driving speeds requires re- jetting the carb. Stromberg's are easy to re-jet, as you can access the jets without disassembling the carb. On the bottom front corner of the bowl are two angled brass plugs with screwdriver slots. The jets are inside the float bowl and can be removed with a special Stromberg "jet- wrench". If this is a fresh rebuild, it is not a good idea to run it at idle for extended periods, but rather to vary the rpm while things break-in. A good source of tuning info, jets and jet wrenches can now be found at Stromberg 97.com I don't believe there is any merit to running rich during break-in.

On a freshly rebuilt 1937 Ford 85 HP engine what is the recommended mixture screw settings when just starting out? When I received my carb, one side is 3/4 turn out and the other side is 1 1/2 out and I know that can't be right. When breaking in a new engine, should the engine be a little rich? Thanks! Don
