The user agrees to the following terms:

  1. All information that you provide to us for your membership is correct.
  2. You will not use your membership to spam, harrass, or exploit other members in any way.
  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.
  4. Commercial-type sales postings will not be allowed.
  5. No mass posting or flooding of the boards is allowed.
  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. WHEN others click on your profile, they will see this information.

I hear someone out there makes a conversion kit to go from the original style on 59AB to the crab distributor. Anyone know who that might be. Fighting the wires in this old style is getting the best of me.

Thanks

The crab dist is older than the 59AB. The dist is the same. You can buy the two latches and replace the two wire bails and use the crab distributor cap.
Is that what you wanted to know?

Just a little bit more info.
The "crab" style distr. cap only came on the '42 model cars. Why it only lasted for one model year is a big mystery.
Some people think that the cap was very prone to letting water into the distr...not so. If the rubber boots on the wires are tight and the cap has a good gasket, they are not anymore prone to water entering the system than any other cap.
The coil for the crab style cap is mounted up on the intake manifold just like the '46-48's
As already stated, you just need the '42 style spring clips on the '46-48 distr.
The Harmon-Collins dual point/coil ignitions all used the '42 cap... I have had one of these ignitions on my '36 Ford for over 55 years, having driven it in snow blizzards and driving rain storms, I never had the car stall because of a wet ignition.

I agree with Bill, as I've used a "crab" on various
high performance motors through the years. One
advantage was that you could keep the plug wires well
separated with the use of fiber or rubber spacers. We
felt that this was desirable to reduce inductive losses
and potential cross-firing under high compression
applications. Harmon & Collins also used the crab on
their racing magnetos. Currently, MSD offers a "Pro-
Billet" front mount performance distributor that uses a
"crab-style" cap, albeit with a different attachment
method (screws vs clips) and male terminals. So...I
always thought the "crab" was one of Ford's Better
Ideas.

OK... I got a good one for you!

As I was reading the latest posting on this thread, my wife leans over my
shoulder to see what I was reading, and asks: "Someone is your club is a
crab Distributor? See if you can get some and I'll go get a fresh loaf of
sour french bread!"

That's good Alan! Guess we just assume......! At
least she didn't think we were "distributing" the kind
of crabs
we were warned about in the service.

Get out that old, green ointment
Give those crabs a disappointment
Keep it on for a year and a day
Though it burns, and it itches
It will kill those son's-a-*******
In the good old fashion way!

Now, if this doesn't get me kicked off the forum,
I humbly apologize to those who have had the misfortune
of acquiring same.

To convert the 1946-48 distributor to the 42-44 crab style, you only need a couple pieces. The clip kit (replaces the single bail), the 21A rotor, and the 21A crab cap. There is a subtle difference in the spark plug wires, but if you aren't worried about originality on the setup, you could use the existing wires (if they are in good condition). We stock all the parts mentioned.

The aftermarket offers the electronic version of the 42-44 crab distr, but guys often run into clearance problems using that setup (particular with one brand as the dizzy assy extends pretty far forward compared to the original). The stock crab distr was actually a Mallory design and not a bad one at that.

Danny:

I would think than any of the good people who advertise
coil rebuilding in the V8 times would be able to supply
the clips, rotor, gasket. Keep in mind though, that
unless you have a 42, it will not be the correct
distributor. Might be just the ticket for a Street
Rod, but doesn't do justice to any other year Ford than
a 42. Going back to the original issue, "sorting-out"
all those wires isn't really a big deal, as I'm sure
most 46-48 owners will attest to. 32-41 owners have the
same issues times two. As I've stated earlier, my
favorite distributer (after my converted DuCoil Zephyr)
is the crab, but on my 38, I have the correct year,
correct looms, etc., because I think it just "looks
right". There is a certain elegance to doing it the
way it was intended.
