I've recently acquired a set of NOS Houdaille shocks for my 39. Based on the shape of the filler plugs they are crrently filled with a caster oil based fluid. Is this realy necessary or can I drain the shocks and use a good quality hydraulic oil such as Valvoline or Sh*ll Tellus 32 ? If a caster oil based fluid is realy necessary any suggestions as to where I can get it?

Most people use hydraulic jack oil in the stock shocks. If your stock shocks have oil in them and are not leaking, I would leave them alone and put them on the car.

dwj39, Castor oil is still available and if your shocks are in good condition, it should not be necessary to change the oil.

I bought some castor oil at a Walgreens drug store. It was in the section where women's beauty aids (really) are sold. It came in a small bottle, about 4 oz as I recall and was claimed to be 100% pure. When I added some to my old shocks, I was surprised how little they needed.
