Like 37 Coupe, I am not a fan of wheel adapters, since as he says the 40-48 drums are so readily available. There are adapters made to convert 5 on 5.5 drums to Wide 5 rims (Speedway Motors), but not the other way around. Given that the back spacing on the bolt circle is closer to the hub on the Wide 5, you would end up with an increased tread width which can result in "bump steer" at the front.

I would not use an adapter if I did not want to use the wide five wheels,I would change all brake drums to 40-48. I have always hated wheel adapters especially cast aluminum ones, had a buddy who was always "adapting" to another wheel whether it was on a VW or his F100,his wife refused to ride with him after a tire blowout and near turn over, shredded tire on fender after only a twenty mile drive lugs loosened up. Another local guy was warned about his setup on his street rod, fiberglass roadster, rear wheel came off and roadster rolled killing them both, happened in Canal Winchester Ohio on their way to street rod nationals, they never made it out of county they lived in.
