I'd replace all the rod nuts with self lockers, and torque them to spec of 40-45 ft lbs. Finding that many broken cotter pins is a warning that more will likely fail. As Alan says, it is probable old cotters were reused. Many times these have been partially sheared, and fall apart. If a rod lets loose, it is almost always true that the block will be ruined.

my guess would be the builder used old cotter keys and they broke when he re-used them--if torgue is OK then install new cotter keys and count yourself lucky!!

I am replacing the rear main oil seal. Upon removal of the oil pan I found 5 of the cotter pins used on the connecting rod bolt castle nuts lying in the pan. all had apparently broken off and worked out. This engine has about 15,000 miles on it since a complete rebuild. The castle nuts and corresponding holes in the rods were aligned and torque was good. Any idea what could have caused this?
