I was recently told there is a difference between the 1933 and 1934 Potter Trunk for Ford sedans. Any pictures of the two types?

Big, Potters trunks are not a Ford accessory, and were made for many different automobiles in many different styles. There were also other manufacturers besides Potter, all could and did fill custom orders, and individuals also made their own versions. Among the many different styles and sizes, a popular feature was an opening top as well as a drop front. Some trunks were expandable by a slide-out front, or a hinge-over top. The term "Potters Trunk" has come to define purpose rather than manufacturer, just as the term "Continental Kit" applies to purpose rather than manufacturer. A true Potters trunk is rare today, and collecting them is a hobby in itself. Don't ask me anything else about Potters trunks, because I already told you more than I ever knew.

Alan said: "Potters trunks are not a Ford accessory" - Wrong! The "Potter" Trunk was introduced as a Ford Authorized Accessory - Dec. 19, 1933 - $37.50. Ford referred to this trunk as a "Luggage Carrier" in their 1934 Accessory Brochure/Flyer. Ford Part Number is 40-18580-Luggage Trunk. Given the date of introduction, it appears that the trunk was specific to the 1934 Model year but it was also Authorized for the 1933 Model year. Needless to say, the trunk was built to Ford spec's by Potter Munufacturing Co., Jackson, Mich.
