I have a Mitch*ll Overdrive installed in my early ford V8. It works well in reducing rpms at highway speeds in overdrive, but it has a medium pitch whine when in overdrive. In standard drive no whine, very quiet. Would be interest in others experience if they have a Mitch*ll installed in their V8. Thanks for any insight.

I rode in the rear seat of a friend's '36 Fordor that had a Mitch*ll, and not a word was spoken about the loud gear whine out of embarrassment. He is long gone now, and the car was sold to a Newbie before he passed.

Are you using the recommended gear oil in the O/D unit? Is the oil level at its specified capacity?

If memory serves (oh oh) the Mitch*ll does make a whine. I believe it is from the gear design. Still, do check the oil both for level and correctness as others have advised.

It is difficult to manufacture geartrains that are totally silent. When your powertrain is in direct drive, the power does not go through any transmission gears, it passes through the gearbox where the input shaft and the output shaft are directly coupled to each other and rotate at the same speed.

Thanks for the the comments to my post. I am using StaLube 90-140 GL 5, with a bit of STP added as recommended by Mitch*ll. I just changed the gear lube - had been running 85-90 GL 5.

I went with a Columbia overdrive on my 33 because I didn’t like the gearshift sticking out of the floor for Mitch*ll. A Columbia is as quiet as a mouse. TIM CARLIG
