The user agrees to the following terms:

  1. All information that you provide to us for your membership is correct.
  2. You will not use your membership to spam, harrass, or exploit other members in any way.
  3. Vulgar, Abusive, Racist and Sexist Language will not be tolerated.
  4. Commercial-type sales postings will not be allowed.
  5. No mass posting or flooding of the boards is allowed.
  6. No Advertising of parts or cars; no Ebay or business/commercial ads (please use the "Classified" for ads Wanted or For Sale).
  7. VIEWING MULTIPLE TOPICS ON SCREEN: You can choose to see more than 10 Topics at a time ... Log In and choose "Preferences" from the top bar on the Forum page. Scroll down and Change the "Default Topics Returned" parameter to 25 or 50, and save the changes. Since this setting is stored in your browser 'cookies' (if enabled), it seems to use that stored value even if you are not logged in. So, if you use a PC that you haven't logged into the forum from, the setting still seem to remain at the default.
  8. EXTERNAL PHOTO LINKS ON FORUM: You can still use external photo links in your posts on the new forum. They follow the rules of any link in that they have to have the URL link qualified down to the full image file name (example: .jpg). The links will open in a new browser window, the same as an uploaded image attached to a post. Since an image attachment to any post does not display inline with the post, the results are the same. You can use multiple external links within a post. This link is from photos on a site from Don Clink's 'Deuce@75' albums:

    http://donclink.com/deuce_75_1/images/dscn2950.jpg

Using links from photo sites such as Photobucket can help in "size" issue with uploaded attachment files. For best viewing in web browsers, photos should be around the 800x600 pixel range, and probably not more than 1024x768. Most cameras today store HUGE jpg image files, as the default settings are in the 7, 8, 10, and 12Mb image sizes. The image files that are then attached are very large, and the browser can't display the full image size without using the scroll bars. Use the re-sizing functions of your photo editing software to reduce the image to 800x600, which reduces the file sixe and the image load time in the browser. Don uses Google's free Picassa3 software, which is an excellent photo management product. All of the photo albums of the Deuce, Grand National, and Auburn that are links on the NORG site were built using Picassa's web creation functions. And it's free? (THANKS to Don Clink for the info!)
  9. HOW DO I SHOW MY EMAIL ADDRESS ALONG WITH MY USERNAME? You can LogIn on the Forum, and select PREFERENCES. On this page Members can add optional information such as their City,State, Country; Occupation; Hobbies: list a Homepage; list AOL Instant Messanger Handle; Signature; "Make Email Address viewable to others;" and even change the number of Default Topics shown on a page. WHEN others click on your profile, they will see this information.

Hello there,

My '39 Fordor Deluxe engine has developed a kind of a knock like sound that I am wondering if you might have an opinion of what it is? I'm hoping it's OK to post a link of it and that the sound is good enough that you can hear it. I'm not sure what it is, but the sound seems to spin with the engine and goes up and down with the RPM's. It seems like it is not coming from the top of the engine. The sound is pretty much nonexistent when the engine is cold and becomes more prevalent as the engine warms up and when hot. Hopefully you can have a listen on the video link below (turn your sound up) and let me know what your thoughts are. Let me know if it would be useful to share other videos of it, such as revving it, etc.

Thanks!

It's still not clear which part this is because I think it's near the internal combustion part. You should have it checked by the dealer

39Fordfan - Questions here...

Under what circumstances did this noise start?
Is your oil pressure okay?
Does the noise go away when you push the clutch in?
If I'm hearing it correctly, it sounds DEEP, and that's not good. Could be a bearing problem, either rod or main...

Could be something simple like fuel pump noise. The cause could be worn fuel pump pushrod bushing or internal pump wear.

If it's a deep sound it is a main bearing, or rod bearing that is bad.

MAYBE a valve stuck partly open and the knock is the lifter knocking at the stem...??? Happened to a friend's 8ba once. Sounds too "light" for a main bearing to me.

Hi Koalanorth, Thanks for your reply. I've got an appointment to have a Pro look at it in about a week and a 1/2. I'll keep you posted.

Hi MG. Thanks so much for your reply.

* It had a bad clutch and so I haven't driven the car as much as in the past. The knock sound seemed to develop since the car got so few miles run on it at the end of last season. I got the clutch replaced over the winter and the knock got worse this season. I've run 20/50 Castrol oil in it for most of the 20 years I've owned it. It doesn't have an oil filter so I change the oil every few hundred, never more than 500 miles.
* It seems to have normal to good Oil Pressure. If the dash gauge can be relied upon it always runs above 15.
* The noise is ever present with the running engine and pushing the clutch in doesn't affect it, though I will double check that.
* The sound does seem as if it is deep, but I'm not completely sure of that. I'm going to put a stethoscope on it and try and isolate it better myself before I take it to the shop in a week and a half.
A few years ago I had the timing gear go out on it. I had a shop press a new one on and I've wondered if it might be related to that?

Hi Carcrazy,

Thanks for your reply!

I've wondered about that too, if the noise is being caused by a peripheral component, though I didn't think about the fuel pump. Which is plausible since I haven't had any problems with it since I replaced it maybe 17 years ago. I have been running Skip's remanned water pumps and had a problem with them about 5 years ago and it occurred to me that one of them may be acting up again. The other thing is I had a shop replace a sheared timing gear about 3 years ago with the engine still in the car. It was a pressed in type of gear but we were able to get the old one off cleanly and a new one on with the engine still in the car. Except for a worn clutch which got replaced this last winter the engine has been running trouble free since then.

Hi Steve, Thanks for your reply.

I agree. I'm hoping that's not what it is. Though it definitely has crossed my mind. I'm going to have a shop help determine what it is for sure, but the knock is quiet enough and I've had a few things done in the last five years like replacing the pressed in timing gear with the engine still in the car and a problem with one of Skip's water pumps that make me wonder if it could be related?
