I took the battery out; and later,after putting it back in found the charging meter in dash was discharging So then I connected a jumper wire from to the to the biggest wire at the back of the generator (supposed to be "A" armature); and just touched it to the connection on the regulator BATT terminal (nearest to the battery) momentarily. The rearmost wire on the regulator has the same markings as the one on the rear of the generator; so that is the (ARM) armature connection.The post on the regulator toward the front of the car is always hot! that's BATT. Why did you take the battery out? When you reinstalled the battery, could it be that you might have reversed polarity? 1950's are positive ground...

MG- I posted a new message today- 4/11/24- that tells all about why the battery was taken out; how it got connected with negative ground; how I corrected the ground to positve; and how I tried to polarize with a jumper wire (with the motor not running) from- batt to arm- on the regulator;and it sparked when I did that!! But ; when I start the motor it shows DISCHARGE on the dash gauge,and reving the motor shows even more discharge!! what is wrong? and how to fix it!!" DUH! A friend helping me did that he connected NEGATIVE TO GROUND!!! A day or so later I tried to polarize it, and when it didn't take; I saw then that he had made it negative ground!He's a long time mechanic; so I thought he could be trusted; but I was wrong and didn't see this! I guess he only knows alternators! Then i changed it to positive ground and I tried to polarize it; and it wouldn't take!!! How do I get it to polarize? Is the regulator ruined? Tom or Kubes will know these answers for sure; and maybe some other on the site.

Yes; a friend put the battery back in and made it NEGATIVE GROUND!! I didn't realize it and tried to polarize it!When I found out the the battery terminals were not correctly connected , I changed them; to pos. ground, neg. to start solenoid! Then I tried again to polarize it- to no avail!!

Yes! I mistakenly put the battery back in with (N) ground; tried to polarize-no go! Removed battery, put it in with positive ground; tried to polarize again-(BATT to ARM on regulator) it won't polarize!!! What to do???? Did that ruin the regulator??

Yes it was mistakenly re-installed with reversed polarity!so I took it out and put it back in with POSITIVE GROUND!!!, NEGATIVE TO STARTER SOLENOID!! Regards, Steve Lee

Took the battery out to clean up the acid ,and boric acid i put on it to nuetralize that acid.I put it back in later and hooked up the cables to the wrong termials((-) to grnd.' (pos) to starter solenoid!

Yup! The got reversed!! Switched then to POS. ground; NEG to solenoid!
