I am replacing exhaust on a 1939 V8 flathead. Exhaust guy says a single line with flow master muffler will work fine. Would I gain any performance or quality sound from dual system?

Negligible performance improvement, but dual pipes will most certainly provide for a super wide grin on your face, particularly if you also block the heat risers. For this, drill a 1/8” hole in each of two wheatstalk pennies, preferably from the year of your car, remove the intake, tap the Pennie’s into the heat risers, replace the intake, then smile ear to ear! Dual Smithy's sound cool. No performance gain.

It has been well documented that dual exhaust and unchambered mufflers will in fact lower the fuel mileage due to a heavy foot on the accelerator peddle.

Do not use Flowmasters, they are a big waste of money. For a flathead use regular old glass packs and it will sound just the way it should sound.

I gave up on steel/glass packs over fifty years ago in favor of stock type chambered mufflers on both side... The silence was golden especially on long drives. I did increase the pipe size to 2" from the stock manifolds to the bumper.
