My 48 Mercury has a problem with the clutch. The car was fine for 30 years and 15,000 miles. The clutch pedal has gradually engaged closer to the floor over the last 3 years. I adjusted it up so it had 1 1/2 inch of free play 2 years ago. It has gradually increased to 4 inches of free play and is hard to sh*t gears now. What do you think is wrong? There are no strange noises or smelling coming from the clutch pedal operation. Bill Large

Oops:I forgot to mention that I replace all the clevis/pins/ rods/ and brass 1/2 moon bearings when I set the free height to 1 1/2 inches 2 years ago. So, I don't think the external apply linage has worn out. Thanks, Bill Large

A couple of things that could be causing this problem are: the bracket which retains the clutch equalizer shaft in place may have moved due to loose retaining bolts allowing excess motion, worn or loose engine and/or transmission mounts may be allowing the engine/trans. assembly to move. Have you attempted to adjust the free play back to the desired 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" dimension? If so, what have you found?
