I drove my 36 cabriolet to the shop today. This is the first time I have had it out in the road. I got her up to 50mph today. After I dropped my speed down to 40, I noticed that the speedo was stuck on 50mph. Is something wrong with the speedo or could it may be a cable?? Also, I had to leave the choke pulled out just a little to get the best throttle response. Why??? Thanks!!

The speedo cable is probably gummed up with dried grease. It is easy to check. The cable is scr*w*d in at the back of the speedo housing. The tuff part is twisting your body to get to it behind the dash. If there was no whirring noise before this happened, the internal cable has probably jammed and locked the speedo at where the marking is. While you are under the dash, only 3 nuts and lock washers hold the speedo in place, so it would be a good idea to remove it to check it out. You will also have to remove the dash light sockets. They just clip over tabs on the speedo housing. Hope this helps.

Regarding the speedo, it is possible that the lube for the indicator shaft is gummy due to age, and the spring that returns the needle is not strong enough to return the needle, or the spring is broken. I'm not familiar with the '36 speedo, but I took the one from my '46 apart to clean and lube it, and it wasn't too difficult. If you do the job, use clock oil... not something like WD40. The choke issue is likely caused by an air leak in the intake somewhere. Hook a vacuum gauge up to the port where the hose for the wiper vacuum is connected, start the engine, and the reading should be a steady needle in the 19-21 inch range. Also check the entire length of the wiper hose for connections and leaks. One way to test for air leaks is to run an unlit propane hand torch all around the base of the carb and intake manifold with the engine at idle. The engine will speed up if there is an air leak at any particular location.

SOUNDGUY2000 the speedometer needs to be lubed, also at that time , lube the speedo cable with speedo cable with graphite take the speedometer out and lube it or send out, the return spring is for calibration. so do not harm it, very fragile the needle shaft only needs a small drop , you can test the speedo with a drill and a 1/8 square drive shaft, when was the last time you used the car,, on using the choke, HOW OLD IS THE GAS, ? you might need to run a carb cleaner though the fuel system , like seafoam LETS hear how you made out. 37Ragtopman

The speedo works by the cable turning a magnet inside a metal cup. The two do not touch. The cup rotates on a couple of pivots that if they become dirty or gumed up will cause the pointer to stick. Suggest you have the speedo cleaned and lubed. Make suree you have the correct speedo with the Ford logo on the bottom of the face. The car running better with some choke indicates the car is running slightly lean (Not Good for the engine), which could be from a vacuum leak. or slightly plugged fuel passages. or improper main jets.
