Ford prior to '47 was the rouge in the auto manufacturing industry. Chrysler, GM and many other manufactures generally used serial numbers and/or data plates that were more detailed to describe their vehicles. Chrysler Historical has complete records for all of the vehicles they manufactured from 1928 on. The first three numbers in the serial number for a Chrysler built vehicle denote the plant of origin.

What you say about a VIN number is true. However the sequential number is the only identification number for you car and therefore is also important.

It should be noted that generally speaking the SERIAL Number on a EFV8 is not a VIN, Ford numbers were SEQUENTIAL numbers, the only part of the number that means any thing is the first two numbers following the star, ie. denotes 18 , a V8, other numbers/ letter, will denote 4 or 6 cylinder. A quest to establish 'MATCHING NUMBERS' to establish some kind of a pedigree on an EFV8 is a waste of time. The only variation being if the transmission is original to the car, the number stamped into the case will match the serial number on the frame, without the STARS. I believe the term VIN, in lieu of serial number came into common use during the 1960's when engine, transmission and other power train number options were incorporated into the VIN .

Mr. Displayman, Here's my understanding how the VINs are generated for the 1940s, and probably other years: An engine and transmission are married at their respective factory and a serial number, with a prefix number, is placed on top of the bellhousing area. When that assembly is placed in a vehicle (it has no serial number at this point), then that number is stamped into the frame in three places, all on the driver's side. Also, a 'star' is stamped before and after the number to discourage fraud. My 1940's VIN has no letters. Barney

does the stamped vin on the frame just show the numeric vin numbers, or does it show the 799A, or 699A prefix numbers? Thanks, Bob
