I searched for this and apparently it hasn't been discussed in the last 365 days. Please remind me what two contacts I touch in the voltage regulator to go from 6v positive ground to 6v negative ground. I replaced my starter solenoid and now I have no power for lights or anything else. All the wires have been checked, connections good, no breaks in the battery wires, etc. Since I've lost power to the switch, the car won't start and none of the lights work. Very frustrating.

46 coupe you might have the wires on the solenoid on the wrong side, it has to be on the same side that the battery cable is connected to, you might have it hooked to the cable that goes to the starter, and only have electric when the starter is engaged any photo's was wondering why you want to change the polarity ? voltage regulator are what you need to change, the generator works either way, goumdiing the field wire for a split second, usually works, should have a slight spark you should invest it a repair manual, to save you time and parts, hope this helps 37Ragtopman, Maine

Thanks for responding. I'll try to get pics later today. I connected the new solenoid the same way the old one was. Thinking the new one might be faulty, I reinstalled the old one. I get the same results with both. I have a negative ground set up. So the positive battery cable goes to the closest terminal on the solenoid. The starter cable goes to the opposite large terminal and the small wire go to the small center terminal. I have power at the end of the postive cable but when connected to the solenoid terminal I get no reading on my meter. I have readings on my other large terminal and the small terminal. This has happened on both solenoids . Everything worked on the car prior to this. Your help is appreciated. I'll wait for your response before proceeding.

There are solenoids that use different wiring. They are not all the same internally.

Here are a couple of pics showing what's hooked up. I would think that the repro solenoid would be the same inside as the original for the car in question. As it is the original one isn't working now either and I don't know what changed. That's why I asked about polarity

Your solenoid is not wired correctly. The connectors from the loom should be connected to the side that the battery cable is connected to. With a Ford type solenoid, the battery cable connects to the driver's side of the solenoid along with the wires from the loom. The starter cable goes on the passenger side of the solenoid. The starter button connects to the center terminal. The solenoid coil gets the hot side connection from the left side of the solenoid and the grounded side of the coil from the center tap. When the solenoid is connected correctly, the center terminal should have 6 volts until the starter button is depressed.

Hi Tom I'll change the connections. I don't understand why everything worked with the old solenoid hooked up as shown. I don't know if there is enough wire in the loom to reach the opposite side.. You did see that the car is now on negative , not positive ground. If on positive ground all the wires fit as you stated. If the wires don't reach I'll try turning the solenoid upside down. I'll wait for your further input. Thanks Brad

46 coupe What I see in the photo, that the main electric wiring is on the wrong it should be connected to the same side as the battery terminal on the solinoid so it supplys elect to the rest of the car, why would you change the polarity, it is not needed and cause many problems.,??? All gauges will most likley not work correctly or not at all and might burn out,??? might read opposite coil will need not work 100% not unless you reverse the wiring on it,, you should invest in a repair manual for you investment, this would be a great help my 2 cents 37Ragtopman

Hello, I have the shop manual the club sells plus a shop manual for the 1939-48 Ford and Mercury. I did not refer to them because the car had been working with this wire setup since I bought it in 2015. Did you read my post to Tom ? I just hope you or he can answer my question. I will reverse the set up as you all have said. I'm just curiouos as to why it worked before. Thanks to you all I should have it running tomorrow as I can't get to it today.
