Is there a way to tell if I have a 12v or 6v starter? Cars converted to 12v there’s a vreg on it Has that goofy looking centrifugal force thing on the starter shaft Just clicks can feel it in the starter body. Pulled off car used a 12v motorcycle battery I had and it spun but wouldn’t throw the gear out. Prior to clicking while cranking sometimes starter would make a horrible clunk sound like the gear didn’t come back in Decided to replace starter but all I’m seeing are 6v ones I always thought if you put 12v to anything 6 it would fry it now idk?? Tia for the e help guys

Although I have not done this I understand the 6V starter will hold up to 12V. One problem is the starter is over powered by the 12V and this results in damage to the Bendix as you are seeing. The starter can be converted to 12V.

Look for 12V stamped on the case of the starter. Most of the stamped ones have the stamping near the terminal. The Ford 12V starters have a thinner rear plate than the 6V starters. You can have your starter rebuilt as a 12V starter or buy one from a 56 or 57 Ford, they were 12V and will fit your 1936 motor.
