hi flatfoot use a volt meter on the output on the generator, to see if it is a the amp meter or the generator, you need to dianois the problem before to start changing parts. check for loose electrical conections, if you want a easy check, start the car, set on high idle, loosen the battery cable and disconnect the battery if it quits, you have a generator circuit problem if it contuines to run, you probably have other issues, you can adjust the third brush in the generator for more out put is the commutator dirty and are the brushes worn down, if might be the generator needs rebuilding,, if so you can use CERTIFIED AUTO ELECTRICAL in OHIO the cutout is it a repop ? or a original these should start working at about 10 miles a hour hope this helps , 37Ragtopman,
