My 1939 Ford’s transmission pops out of 2nd gear a few seconds after down shifting and slowing down in 2nd gear. Cause? Fix? Thanks for your counsel.

Sounds like one of the thrust washers is worn.

Yes most likely a thrust washer in the transmission but first look at the top shift mechanism. If the transmission slips into gear look at the two springs and steel balls that are supposed to somewhat hold the shift mechanism in any of the gear positions and neutral.

My truck would do the same thing. Mac Vanpelt said it was the syncos . I changed them and no longer had a problem. If you are going through all of that be sure to check all the other components in the transmission. It is a big job just getting everything apart.
