I had the same problem with my first Drake handle. Turning the lock cylinder extends two round lugs on the handle shank to operate the latch. If the link from the lock cylinder is intact, you may be able to open the trunk by carefully manipulating the cylinder. My second version of the Drake piece was much better quality than the first, and has been trouble free. In addition, you don't have to use the key each time you open the lid, a great improvement. If all else fails, you may have to drill out the lock and turn the release, as access thru the back seat is mostly blocked by the body stiffener.

You may have to crawl into the trunk after removing the back seat. It sounds like the lock is not fully disengaging. Try putting some "Lockease" in the tumbler and try the key to see if it turns farther. Try this first before going through the trunk.
