I normally put the grommet in the firewall, install the dash harness inside and then feed the engine part of the harness through the grommet from the inside into the engine side.

A little liquid dish soap helps too.

Even with a new harness I found it necessary to split the grommet in order to make it fit. This on a '47 Fordor.

Sorry I should have been more specific. I am installing a new harness.

Are you installing a new harness or are you just wanting to install a new wiring harness grommet? If you just want to install the grommet, I would cut a slice in it and install it around the harness that is already installed.

Before I get completely frustrated; what is the easiest way to install this grommet? Is it easier to put the harness through the grommet then push it through the firewall or is it easier to put the grommet in the firewall then feed the harness through the grommet? Then the next question is which end of the harness is easier to feed through the harness; the dash side first or the engine side. I want to thank all in advance who advise me on this.
