the red fluid in my '36 temp gauge is MIA. or nearly so. when the engine is hot, I can see 1/4" or so of fluid at the bottom of the tube. otherwise, nothing. I don't see any evidence of fluid having leaked out. anyone know of a way to get the gauge working again, short of a professional repair?

Test the gauge by inserting the bulb into boiling water and the gauge should read hot. Some engines run cold it is possible you need thermostats or one thermostat is stuck open.

I wish. The system boils over on a hot day.

Looks like repair is needed. I believe John Wolf company in Willoughby, OH has been recommended. Check on fordbarn.com

Boiling over can be a sign of bad thermostats! When a bad thermostat does open it can lock into the open position.
