the 40 ford glove box where the clock wire goes thru the hole in the box is there a grommet of some kind that goes in the hole

Yes sir, there most certainly is. Photos attached. The grommet looks like an ordinary brass fitting that goes in the lower left section of the box itself. Hope these photos help. Tom

You have good eyes. There is a very small clamp right next to the left glove box door hinge. It holds the wire in place leading to the grommet. The clamp is held by the screw head that is visible in the picture I tried to get a close up of the clamp for you, but my camera can't do REAL close up photos. Tom

tom, the clamp that holds the clock wire is the wire tight in the clamp or is it loose so it can move when you open the glove box

There was no clamp there authentically. The ground wire was placed between the nut and hinge on the left side. The "hot" wire for the lamp was routed through the brass grommet in the bottom of the box liner.
