where do the wires go from the rear backup lights to the front engine compartment? don't they go to the neutral safety switch? If so, does anyone have a diagram showing the wire connections. Is there a wire that goes to the transmission? fordomatic. Thanks ahead of time

Yes, it goes to the neutral safety switch. My wiring diagram only shows 2 terminals on the switch and I believe that the one for the backup light requires 4 terminals like the one on my Lincoln. Two of the terminals are for the backup light, one comes from the light switch for power and the other goes to the backup lights. The parking or headlights need to be on for the lights to work. The 1949-1953 Chassis parts catalog has a drawing showing the routing of the wires for the standard shift. Tom

Found problem. No power to neutral safety switch which is were the black wires are connected. One is for the backup lights and the is for power from under dash. Next, check wire for power from dash. 1953 Ford Sunliner is a little different then yours. When you put the transmission in reverse the backup lights work via the neutral safety switch. I checked the switch and got the backup lights to work by jumping hot wire to neutral safety switch. Thanks.

The lights have to be on in order for the switch to have power. The power to the safety switch comes from the light switch.
