A quick check for the early 24 stud block is the 2 bumps on each side of the casting at the oil pan area. These bumps are for the core plugs in the oil pan mounting surface. If you have these bumps and a pencil can rest on the block behind the timing gear cover and the intake manifold mounting surface is machined flat, it is most likely a 38, 39 or 40 block.

Those numbers are simply the casting (mold) identification. It won't help you ID the block.

I just removed an " A" 24 bolt engine. On the block casting at the top rear center is the ID "H 614" surrounded by the impression of slotted screw heads. Just beyond the right screw head is : "X 12" in the casting. The engine is reported to be from a 1939 car. Is this identification correct?
