37ragtopman: this is the best idea I have heard yet. I never thought of loosening all the rods. I'm working on an old block that has sat outside without the heads for years. The lower end looks good so I am trying to save the crank. The block is toast. Thanks much.

hi try this to remove the rods, you can try breaking the pistons loose, by try loosening each connecting rod, so the crank turns, turn the crank , with all eight rods loose, not completely removed now use a hard wood board the size of the piston bore, and tap each one separate, using a good rust buster, now you are only trying to loosen one piston at a time. [ not all eight at one time, , cause when you knock one piston down another is trying to go up, this works if cylinder walls are rusty, hone the rust , so pistons can move up I cannot tell you how many times I have do this on many different make of engines, hope this helps 37Ragtopman

The Ford and Mercury engines used the same rods, 0BA-6200. I would take 39Ken's advice and break the pistons or use a 50/50 mixture of Acetone and automatic transmission fluid to break the rust bond between the piston rings and the block.

Rods can be re-conditioned. I would break the pistons for removal.

Do the ford 8BA and the 8CM merc . engines use the same connecting rods? I;m truing to remove the crank from a badly rusted 8CM block and am considsering cutting the rods to get it out. If the merc rods are different I would try to save them, as they are harder to find than the 8BA ford ones. Any advice?
