In neutral the "shift arms," on the steering column should be parallel to each other, when the two shift arms on the transmission are both in the neutral position, for the Initial adjustment. Then if you have a problem, re-check, because it is difficult to really get them exactly parallel by eye, and you may be just a little bit off.You can check that, by pulling the shift lever up and down, to see if you have any interference when you do that, and adjust the one that has the interference a little up or down. When it's correct you should be able to move the shift lever on the column up and down, as if you were going to select 1st and reverse, or 2nd and 3rd and feel no interference, it should feel smooth. It takes a little patience sometimes to get it right , but "Patience is a virtue"that you have to have to get things right on these old buggys!
