Rear differential rebuild

I am rebuilding the differential in my 1935 sedan (my first one), I installed new bearings, races, side gears and shaft, nos axles, and a new ring and pinion. all the bearings and races are seated properly. the question that I have, is there a limit on how many shims that can be used? I have a .003" on the left with .009" of pinion backlash, but on the right side I have .030" for the proper carrier bearing side load. Is this o.k.?, if it is I will continue on and check the pinion to ring gear pattern. Randy

Randy: The "acid-test" really is the pattern. In the fifties, we didn't have dial indicators, or spec's to work with, so we would simply check the gear pattern. It is, after all, the ultimate indicator of proper gear mesh. I used white lead paint, but I'm sure there is something more environmentally friendly one could use today. I'd hate to tell you how many early Hot Rod Magazine covers were consumed as gaskets setting up our rear-ends. Dan

you could also use PERMATEX NON DRYING PRUSSIAN BLUE, This comes in a small tube, it is a paste, This will tell you were you gears are riding, you will probably have to go to a older auto parts store or NAPA AUTO PARTS, or a machine shop will have this, you should get a manual on how to set up the ring and pinion, in FORDS it is not that hard, just buy the gaskets shim set from the EARLY FORD V8 PARTS in BALLSTON SPA, NY, They sell a nice set of gaskets that come in different thicknesses, and makes this a lot easier TO SET UP,, hope this helps,37RAGTOPMAN

I used pursion blue on it last night and the gear pattern was good. I will finish the assembly today if I find time. Thanks for the responses, Randy
