Alan has offered sound advice. The pickup tube is in fact integral of the plate that was originally riveted and soldered to the forward face of the tank. They can be replaced but I'm not certain where'd you get one. Perhaps another tank that is otherwise scr*p.

VTJoe, if I'm not mistaken, the pickup tube is integral to the fitting having the hole you describe. I've never seen one removed, so I don't know if they are replaceable or not.

Yokomo, I don't know what kind of car you are talking about, but it's not any Ford flathead I know of.

Sounds like you need a fuel tank sending unit. It fills up the opening and contains the fuel level sender and the fuel pickup assembly. Matt Be sure to check out my YouTube pages at: https://www.youtube.com/user/MatthewBergin1 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCJCdOfmXtM8xO9nXeQ-iSQQ

My gas tank simply has an opening on exterior of front side. It looks original, I assume there is a tube that goes toward the bottom middle of the tank which I do not have. HELP ! It is a 1940 Ford Coupe and will have a Flathead.
