I am attempting to reduce excess play in the steering and it looks like I need to remove shims from the steering box. I have the shims located and isolated the individual shims. What is the best method for actually removing the shims. I am afraid of damaging the rest of the shims. Are these shims metal or paper? Should I grab them with small need nose pliers and pull. Just new to this and any advice is welcome

As Jim states, there are a lot of things going on in the steering box that need attention, that a shim set is going to help. Sector shaft gears, sector shaft bushings, bearings etc. Have you isolated the play and determined that the steering box is the culprit.
